Bellingham Ski to Sea Race and Festival
Every year during Memorial Day weekend Bellingham is home to the Ski to Sea Race. Functioning in it’s current capacity since 1973, but tracing it’s roots to the 1911 Mt. Baker Marathon, the race consists of 7 legs (x-cntry ski, d. hill ski, running, road bike, canoe, mtn. bike, and sea kayak) that take teams from Mt. Baker Ski Resort to the waters of Bellingham Bay, a distance of over 100 miles. The Ski to Sea is one of the largest and longest multi-member relays in the world, with 500 teams participating on 2011.
The race takes place on Sunday, with participants finishing between 2 and 5 pm. You can watch teams race across the finish line at Marine Park, or enjoy food, crafts, live music and the beer garden at the Fairhaven Street Fair. Saturday events include a warehouse-wide outdoor equipments swap and a community block party at the Boundary Bay Brewery. Also, don’t forget about the 91st Annual Ski to Sea Grand Parade.
If it’s been a while since your last visit to Bellingham, this weekend of activity is definitely worth the trip.
